For the record, this is not about politics; it’s not about the next election… It’s about transparency, accountability, and the facts.
- Mayor Sanchez, Representatives DeFronzo and Hayes, and Governor Lamont have stepped up, as promised, to secure the required $15M in funding for the Allen St. Project. We are grateful for their efforts.
- The promised start time for the Allen St. Project is Spring 2027. We’ve had 15 floods since 2018.
The Project includes storm, sewer, water, and general improvements. Numerous items remain incomplete, including finalizing funding requirements, design, planning, foundation inspections, approvals, bidding, and related items.
The bidding process and contract awards alone could take several months. Qualified construction companies are starting to schedule work now for Spring 2027.
Our flooding victims and taxpayers are requesting Project Updates with a timeline similar to Director Moriarty’s 2024 design schedule. Our last update regarding planning and construction was in January, 2026.
- The inaction by previous Public Officials forced many of us to build Flood Mitigation Systems to protect our properties, hoping to avoid future damage costs and claims. These systems range from basic sump pump installations to property-wide floodwater management. Previous Public Officials failed to act; therefore, we were forced to bear the financial consequences.
Smart Mitigation Strategies lower the financial burden on local governments, property owners, and taxpayers. We protected our properties while previous Public Officials failed to prioritize this project; they delayed dealing with a difficult situation.
We are waiting for Alderman McNamara’s promised revisions to his 2024 Resolution regarding Flood Mitigation Reimbursements. We deserve an equitable cost-sharing reimbursement program that covers all Allen St. flooding victims regardless of their socio-economic status, with a realistic dollar limit per owner-occupied property. The proposed $7500 limit from 2024 is insulting to those living in harm’s way, from ground zero upstream to ground zero downstream. To qualify, victims must provide verifiable receipts covering their mitigation efforts.
Floodwater is not selective. Mitigation work is expensive, and the scope depends on each property’s unique needs. Previous Public Officials failed to act, allowing the problem to deteriorate further.
McNamara’s Mitigation Reimbursement Program was a priority in 2024. It’s now 2026; we are still waiting for his promised revisions. The New Britain Cost-Sharing Sidewalk Repair Program should serve as McNamara’s blueprint for his revisions.
We included Moriarty’s 2024 Design Timeline for the Allen St. Project. We also included McNamara’s 2024 Resolution regarding Mitigation Reimbursements and a copy of the NB Cost-Sharing Sidewalk Repair Program.
We are petitioning Moriarty and McNamara for Progress Updates by September 30, 2026. They are obligated to respond to our victims and taxpayers. We invite Mayor Sanchez to assist with this process.
